Community Grants
Community Grants are available again this year from Cumberland Council. In this area, each local council ward has been allocated £5,000 for small grants, with the potential for larger grants from an area pot of money. 

If you are involved in a community organisation or project, please do think about applying. Last year it was great to see grants awarded right across the Longtown ward area with grants in Bewcastle, Nicholforest, Rockcliffe as well as Longtown. 

The deadline for applications are: 26 July 2024, 25 October 2024 and 12 February 2025, but small grants (under £500) can be considered more urgently if needed.  More details are here. Please get in touch if you want to submit an application and I can advise you on what best to apply for etc. 

General Election 4 July 2024 – Practical Information
As I am sure you are aware, a General Election takes place on 4 July 2024. Our area is now part of the Carlisle Constituency. (We have been in Penrith and the Border constituency since 1993, but this seat no longer exists.)

Voting takes place 7am to 10pm on Thursday 4 July 2024. If you have a postal vote these will be sent out from 17 June 2024. 

If you are not registered to vote, then applications to register to vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 12 midnight on Tuesday, 18 June 2024. Applications can be made online.  

If you are not already signed up for a postal vote, but would like one, then new applications to vote by post Electoral Registration Officer by 5 pm on Wednesday, 19 June 2024.  Applications can be made online.

Remember, if you are voting at a polling station you must now have take Photo ID with you or you will not be able to vote. (Passport, Driving License etc. If you don’t have any of the allowed photo ID then you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate 5pm on Wednesday, 26 June 2024.  Applications can be made online.)

The Liberal Democrat candidate in the General Election is Brian Wernham. Brian is the councillor for Stanwix ward. 

Teenage Market returns to Carlisle
A successful Teenage Market is set to return to Carlisle on Saturday 22 June 2024, 10-3.30..

The Teenage Market offers young people aged between 8 and 25 years old the opportunity to gain experience of selling and marketing their own products. Young performers can also have the chance to take part in the day with performance opportunities available. It is completely free for young people to attend the Teenage Market, with gazebos, tables and sound equipment being provided.

In total 72 traders attended all three markets held last year plus 14 performances.  As always stalls and performance slots are going fast but it’s not too late to book a place. Getting involved couldn’t be simpler, create your trader or performer profile on the Teenage Market website – https://theteenagemarket.co.uk/sign-up/ – and then apply to take part in the Carlisle Teenage Market.

Upcoming Roadworks
Quite a few roadworks coming up, mostly installing broadband cable. In June the main ones are: 
 
C1007 Stonegarthside, near Penton, from a point to the entrance to West Mains Farm, extending in a north easterly direction for approx. 360m. A temporary road closure has been put in place to allow BT to carry out utility works which are expected to commence 7th June 2024 and anticipated to take 1 day to complete.

U1072 Todhills, from a point adjacent to the property known as ‘Arndore’, extending in a south easterly direction for approx. 170m. A temporary road closure has been put in place to allow Morrisons Telecom Services to carry out utility works which are expected to commence 13th June 2024 and anticipated to take 2 days to complete.

C1009 Blackford, from its junction with the U1074, extending in a south westerly direction for approx. 40m.  A temporary road closure has been put in place to allow Morrisons Telecom Services to carry out utility works which are expected to commence 10th June 2024 and anticipated to take 2 days to complete.

Current Planning Applications
Current planning applications in our area. Of particular note are detailed plans for a new cut-de-sac off Old Road in Longtown, just behind Bellsfield, and another agricultural access track to Haithwaite Farm in Penton. 

Please get in touch if you have any queries or issues you would like me to raise. There is no date yet for some of the larger planning applications affecting our area (Gasification plant in Rockcliffe, SPAR at the petrol station in Longtown.) I will let residents know when these are happening.
